response on Classmates

Stephanie’s response on magazines was very good. It really explained the demassification of magazines quite well. I didn’t realize until she mentioned it, that magazines demassified to very small niche audiences. Also as she said there are millions of them though. Anything anyone could want to read about, there’s a magazine for you. I think the fact that they did demassify so well, is the reason that they are still in business as much as they are.

                 I was also very surprised that Ben Franklin was the inventor of this wonderful media, but I mean what hasn’t he invented? As I said in my own response on magazines, I found it interesting how early these were founded. They weren’t as “pretty” as they are today, but they are just as interesting.

Response on Newspapers

Newspapers are a very interesting medium. It’s one of the earliest ones, so why do we still read them? There are several reasons I didn’t think about before Mr. Miller’s lecture, but the first one I thought about was the fact that it’s a tradition. Everyone has just always read them. There’s diverse content in them. There’s the sports section for dad, and even the comics for kids. Another thing I found interesting is that fact that it’s physical. A lot of people like to be able to hold it and take it with them.

I never knew there were so many parts of a newspaper! Not until Mr. Miller’s lecture on it. I knew the very basics, but nothing more. Some of the names make no sense at all, and that kind of bothers me, but they are all needed to make up the newspaper.

Response on Magazines

Did you know the first magazine was published in 1741?! That’s insane! Before the lecture I had no idea they were that old. I also had no idea that they were the first national medium. I guess I always assumed that newspapers were, but I was wrong. Also it’s very unfortunate that they too got demassfified by TV. The thing I found most interesting was the innovations that magazines did.

                 The first one is investigative reporting, and I think this one is the most important. It’s even one of the Seven Yardsticks (Enterprise). I had no idea that magazines started that; again I would have thought newspapers had. The next one is photojournalism; since this is the field I am most interesting in I thought that this was awesome! Thank you magazines. I know that they actually had the room to use full page photos to enhance their stories, I mean go look at National Geographic for example. The last innovation was the invention of the personality profiles. I think these were the less important, but they made the magazines a lot of money. I guess you could say people are pretty nosey.

               

Response on Classmate

Taylor’s response on recordings actually made me laugh. I haven’t thought about how much our generation really has taken this media form for granted. It’s sad really. I mean we, as teenagers, spend a lot of time listening to music, singing it, and even talking about it, and a lot of us don’t even know what made this possible. Before the lecture I was guilty of that as well. Now that I’m aware of it I’m very grateful for this medium; I don’t think I could live without my music either.

                What made me laugh was the idea of our music being “old school” to our kids. My parents always talk about some of their music and I always roll my eyes. I have never really thought about if the roles were reversed, but one day they will be and I will laugh just like my parents do now. It’s kind of a scary thought.

Response on Classmate

Camille’s response on the internet was very interesting to me. I didn’t initially think about the fact that our privacy is almost taken away from us. It’s very true that whatever we put out there is there for good. This could be a very bad thing, but perhaps it could also be a good one?

                You are probably thinking I’m crazy, I mean trust me I love my privacy, but think about it for a second. We are no longer limited of knowledge. We have all the knowledge that reporters have, and this way we can watch how the news is given to us. I think it’s very important to be told the truth, and unfortunately that doesn’t always happen in the news.

                Ever since the internet has taken over, in my opinion, this isn’t as big of an issue anymore. I think it’s requiring the news reporters to take a deeper look, because if they report something wrong, the people will know about it, and this would be very bad for business. Bad business means less money, and we all know that our world if basically run off the stuff. That’s what I got from reading Camille’s response.

Response on Radios

The most I get out of the radio is listening to it in the car. It’s really a shame how people don’t realize what radio did. I know I didn’t before the lecture. I had no idea that it was the first live news medium. It actually gave way for “breaking news.” It also made a lot of sense that the radio’s “golden era” stopped around World War 2.

                The most interesting thing I got was actually about the teen culture saving radio after the war. The teens were all kind of rebellious and radio had the rock music they were looking for. Maybe it’s because I’m a teen, but that’s pretty cool how they saved radio before it could get wiped out by TV. The teen culture gave radio the chance to adapt and demassify for niche audiences, like the rebellious teenagers of that time.

Response on TV

 I am very guilty of watching too much TV, but I am not the worst person as I was happy to find out in the lecture on “TV.” The fact that, on average, TV’s in American homes are on seven hours a day are insane to me! My family and I aren’t that bad. It also amazed me how adapted people got to TV’s and how quickly they spread.

                I also have to agree with the fact that TV keeps up inside and draws people away from other activities. You don’t see kids outside playing as much anymore. When I was little I was outside every chance I got, and I got in trouble for never wanting to come in. I’m not saying that is every children, but it’s not as common as it used to be. A big factor to that is the invention and widespread adoption of TVs. It’s not the only factor, but it was the start.  

Response on Tv Terms

Before the discussion of “TV Terms” I was totally clueless. I always wanted to learn about that industry, so the topic interested me. I knew that a break was the time filled by ads. I knew that a block was the actual show. I also knew that the toss was when the reporter introduces someone else. But that was as far as my TV terms went.  

                I had no idea what a b-roll was, and to be honest I still have no idea why they call it that, but I understand that it’s only a video that can be talked over (that’s called a VO). I also learned what VNR stands for. I think VNR’s defiantly violate the Seven Yardstick of Enterprise. The reporters don’t do anything besides play the package, and from this lecture I have learned to look out of those during the news.

Movies Response

When someone mentions movies to me I automatically go back to my childhood. Those endless hours of Disney movies I made my parents sit through, including the all-day marathons of The Lion King or Cinderella. This is what I thought about when Mr. Miller brought up the topic of “Movies” in class. I had no idea where he was going, and actually it ended up being one of the most interesting topics we had talked about for a while.

                An interesting question he brought up was “Why do we still go the movies?” That made me really think for a while. I mean it was a valid point that we have cable or Netflix now, why go through the struggle of sitting in a movie theater with people you don’t know? The first answer that came to my mind was the fact that it was a place to hang out with my friends, or it was a social experience. There aren’t a lot of places to go in Louisville but my friends and I can always find a dumb movie to watch. Also it kind of is a tradition; the clique “movie date” is a good example of that.

Internet Response

The internet is a wonderful thing that everyone takes advantage of. I don't know what I would do without it. I can’t think about not having spell check, or Google at the tip of my fingers 24/7. I think everyone really takes advantage of it now that it’s so available. The discussion we had in Mr. Miller's class was very eye opening to me.                                                                                                  

 I was born in the late 1990s so the internet has kind of always been here for me. It wasn’t as popular as it is now, but I remember having one of those huge monster computers. You know the ones with the monitors that took up the whole desk space? But they were computers with internet access all the same. Also I don’t really remember when the internet became a big “thing,” but the discussion made me realize it happened in my lifetime when I wasn’t even aware of it. It just kind of happened without anyone really aware of it.                                                                                                         

 Something I actually learned from the lecture was that all media had to go on the internet or suffer, but nothing was demassified by it. That was very interesting to me. I really didn’t comprehend the fact that there are online stores now, when there didn’t use to be. There also weren’t whole shows or movies you could watch from the internet. It’s kind of crazy to think about that someday people will think that the internet was invented and made soo long ago, when it really became “a thing” in our lifetimes.
